{Brevard & Indian River Counties} Space Coast Credit Union was proud to sponsor the Indian River County 2009 Teacher of the Year Award. This is the 4th consecutive year that SCCU has been the primary sponsor of the program.
“Supporting teachers and local education has always been an important part of our community involvement.” says Beverly Hebert, Market Development Manager for SCCU. “We offer unique opportunities just to educators such as our Education Donation program and special loans. The teachers play such an important role in our children’s lives, they deserve our extra efforts and we are truly honored to support this group.” she added.
The 2009 winner was announced at the annual Teacher of the Year event held at a beautiful new venue on the evening of March 5, 2008. Scott Simpson, a Mathematics teacher at Sebastian River Middle School, is the School District of Indian River County’s 2009 Teacher of the Year. At the dinner celebration in honor of the district’s twenty-two nominees for Teacher of the Year, Mr. Simpson said being named the district winner was an incredibly humbling experience. “It was an honor to be selected to represent my school. To be the representative for the district is unbelievable, thank you very much,” he said. Scott Simpson will represent the county in the state competition later this year.
Space Coast Credit Union acknowledged Mr. Simpson’s accomplishment by providing him with a $250 Education Donation Account. The credit union’s Education Donation Program allows members to donate a portion of their credit card rebate earnings to support K - 12 education. This program, which is exclusive to Space Coast Credit Union, allows members to direct their donation specifically to a classroom teacher, club or team, the PTO, or a guidance counselor. Stated Ms. Hebert, “Other corporate donation programs stay at the school level. The donor never knows exactly where the money is directed. Our program allows total control over the donation.” Right now there are approximately $20,000 in Education Donation accounts waiting to be redeemed by local teachers, who use this money to offset the out of pockets expenses they incur to purchase educational materials and supplies.
